Exploring Grayson Lake State Park

Grayson Lake State Park covers approximately 1,512 acres of land. This allows for plenty of room for a variety of activities. Grayson Lake is man-made and surrounded by spacious areas for camping, golfing, and exploring.

Fishing

The lake has 70 miles of shoreline begging to be explored, and while the bank is one of the more popular places to fish on the lake, you can also use watercraft to get into the deeper portions of the lake more easily. The Grayson Lake Marina offers boats to rent, fishing rentals, and bait for sale, and nearby shops can be a resource if you need some new gear.

Grayson Lake fish species include:

  • Bass - spotted, striped, largemouth, and smallmouth
  • Crappie
  • Catfish
  • American gizzard shad
  • Bluegill

A Kentucky State Fishing License is required to go fishing. For easy purchase, these licenses are available at the Campground Ticket Booth, but you can also buy them
online.

Golfing

Enjoy a day out on the green rolling terrain while playing a game of 18. Hidden Cove Golf Course at Grayson Lake State Park is a highly-rated course with sand bunkers, beautiful green hills, and miles of forest. The back tees are set at 7,155 yards, creating a challenge for even the most seasoned of golfers.

Go online and book your tee time. Look over the dress requirements before you arrive. Men should wear shirts that have collars and sleeves. Women should have shirts with collars. Come ready to have a great time while playing on this challenging course.

Kayaking

Grayson Lake does not have any kayaks for rent in the state park, but there are companies in the area that do offer watercraft rentals! Dragonfly Outdoor Adventures has both kayaking and boat rentals, but you will have to transport them yourself if you decide to take the plunge and rent one.

This man-made lake has a lot to offer, and offers gorgeous views of the cliff sides and forests. After a long rainfall, you can occasionally find waterfalls near the cliff sides, making the journey even more jaw-dropping. Grotto Falls is probably the most enthralling one.

Cliff Jumping

While cliff jumping is a popular activity in Kentucky, it is illegal in Grayson Lake State Park. If cliff jumping is a must-do activity on your travel itinerary, try a different lake.

Boating

Obviously, boating is one of the most popular activities you can do on the lake’s water. If you didn’t bring your own pontoon, you can rent a boat from the campground store.

The typical cost for a boat rental is around
$140 dollars a day. There is a boat launch ramp making it easy to get into the lake. Pontoon boats are also allowed.

Paddling

This is a great place for paddleboarders for similar reasons as boaters. The lake is winding and full of scenic views. The rock formations have fresh growth on them, creating breathtaking views.

The little coves and nooks are also fabulous features that are perfect for paddling. Waterfalls are a common occurrence in this lake region, so be sure to look for them! Take your board underneath the waterfall and experience the magic.

Hiking

There are two major hiking trails at Grayson Lake: Lick Falls Loop and Beech Hemlock Trail. Both of the hiking trails are considered moderately difficult.

The two trails connect so it is possible to do both of them together. Beech Hemlock is one mile and takes about 20 minutes to hike. Lick Falls Loop is a little over 3 miles and on average takes 1.5 hours. It’s a great way to get a different perspective on the lake!
